Christopher Lee Reads Stuff

Currently containing Dracula, Frankenstien and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

ETA: now also containing The Lunchpack of Notre Dame and Peter and the Wolf.

Currently NOT containing his Heavy Metal Christmas album, although I could be tempted by a Christopher Lee Sings Stuff playlist at some point too...

Dudes!

I am in the process of making Radcliffe & Maconie's feature "The Chain" into a Spotify playlist and would like some advice. Roughly 2% of The Chain is made up of songs by The Beatles, whose work is not on Spotify. In this case, and with other similar cases, do you think I should use cover versions if available or simply skip along to the next chain link?

By the way, it starts with this. Naturally.

Spotify is adding some functionality to the way it works:
Spotify has announced big changes to its website which will allow users to share music with one another in what it claims is one of the biggest shake ups to the music streaming service since it launched in late 2008.

In a move towards social networking, it's aiming to let users swap and share music tracks as well as allowing them to check out what their friends are listening to.
I'll be interested to see how this works with the mobile app which I use LOADS.

YAY! I got a free trial of spotify premium, so I am busy synching playlists to my mobile phone.
WOE! The Sexy Data Tango still isn't on there.

Also: [personal profile] moviegrrl? Why is the Galaxy Song by Monty Python not on your space playlist?

May have removed Jason Donovan's Greatest Hits...

But they do have Humphrey Littleton!!!! Listening to Bad Penny Blues right now.

*bounces*

Ahem, I suspect this won't mean much if you're not a Jazz or I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue fan.

Warning! This mix may make you want to spork your ears out....

If a good cover version adds to your enjoyment of a song, or gives it a twist you never thought of before, then a bad one tends to be an act of self-indulgence on the part of the recording artist.

Exhibit A - Songs From the Last Century - George Michael an exercise in aural mutilation and wankitude if ever there was one. George does karaoke and inflicts it on the rest of it. The world as one turns away in disgust.

Of course, a bad cover version is a much a question of taste as a good one. I've refrained from putting Madge's version of American Pie on here, as I find it rather charming, to be honest. Other people call it a travesty. PotAYto, PoTAHto.... Similarly I've chosen Joss Stone's terrible cover of God Only Knows, rather than Bowie's, although there's not much in them. But I hate Stone, and Bowie is a god, so there you go.

I've not bothered putting on any panpipe cover versions, or those idiots Only Men Aloud, because there's not even amusement to be had in putting yourself through that.

So here is the track listing for the horror! that is worst cover versions... word to the wise, if you only listen to one track listen to Cosby's version of Sgt Pepper, although I may have to go into hiding afterwards...

So I am listening to (and adding to) Chuck Darwin's Best Cover Versions playlist, and I am finding some frustrations.

Firstly, there is only ONE Me First & The Gimme Gimmes track on Spotify. There is no Nick Cave version of Disco 2000. There is no Leonard Nimoy (and his version of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now is sublime). I have found HIM's Don't Fear the Reaper and Wicked Game, and Dubstar's St Swithin's Day, so I'm not completely annoyed, but still...

What has been your most frustrating fruitless search on Spotify?

Collaborative playlist from me this week is Space.
77 tracks, over five hours long - perhaps I should start editing these damn things down. Or doing proper playlists at the least!

Anyhoo, enjoy, I can guarantee there will be some eclectic stuff you've not heard before...

Hi all.

I, too, come sharing recent playlists

Best Cover Versions - compilation done in collab with a fellow tweeter, of the very best cover versions that people could think of. Versions that add to a song rather than detract. Enjoy and do please add your own fave tracks.

Best Movie Tracks - pretty much does what it says on the tin. I've tried to find some not so obvious tracks for this, "Who Killed Bambi" from The Great Rock and Roll Swindle being my favourite!

I promise they won't all best ofs... although there may be a companion Worst Cover Versions...

I am a fairly new Spotify user, but am already addicted. I have two collaborative playlists so far - angry, and girl power.

Angry is music you can RAGE to, and therfore skews heavily towards the rawk.
Girl Power is much broader ranging, and the criteria for inclusion are that the singer (and preferably the songwriter) should be female, and that the music should be in some way female-empowering.

I am also one of the mods of this fine community, created by the amazing [personal profile] innerbrat. Hi! If you have any problems at any point, or ideas for themes, feel free to let me know. And, obviously, feel free to post your own collaborative Spotify playlists :D

Please note the comm rules, which are very simple and visible to all on the profile page, and, most importantly, have fun :D
